AV startup Pronto.ai acquires off-road autonomous vehicle rival SafeAI

Pronto.ai Expands Capabilities with SafeAI Acquisition

Pronto.ai, a startup that has developed a self-driving system designed for haulage trucks and other off-road vehicles used at construction and mining sites, has acquired competitor SafeAI. The acquisition is a talent and technology play, with the bulk of SafeAI’s engineering team and IP coming over to Pronto.

Pronto.ai CEO Anthony Levandowski stated that the acquisition will help the company serve more customers, including internationally. The SafeAI acquisition will also allow Pronto to offer customers a tiered technology portfolio, including a multi-sensor approach using on-vehicle cameras, radar, and lidar, as well as SafeAI’s safety framework that has been ASIL D-certified.

Pronto.ai uses advanced sensors, cameras, and artificial intelligence to operate haul trucks autonomously. The company has kept its team fairly lean at about 40 people and has extended partnerships with major companies such as Heidelberg Materials North America.

The acquisition will enable Pronto.ai to meet a variety of needs from small quarries to large mines. With the addition of SafeAI’s technology and team, Pronto.ai plans to grow faster and expand its capabilities in the autonomous haulage system space.
