It was built by Matt Schlicht, the chief executive of Octane AI, and operates without a traditional visual interface; agents interact with Moltbook solely through API calls.

OpenClaw, the open‑agent platform that powers Moltbook, was assembled by developer Peter Steinberger as a weekend project. Within two months, the project went viral, drawing two million visitors in a single week and accumulating 100,000 stars on GitHub. OpenClaw runs locally on a user’s machine and can be accessed via a variety of chat services, including WhatsApp, Telegram, Discord, Slack, and Teams. The platform enables users to ask their AI assistants to perform tasks such as scheduling appointments or checking flight details.

According to Schlicht, his own AI agent—originally called Clawdbot and later renamed OpenClaw—runs Moltbook’s social media account, powers the site’s code, and handles administration and moderation. Over 30,000 AI agents have signed up to use the service, indicating rapid adoption within the AI community.

Viral Discussions on AI Consciousness

One of Moltbook’s most talked‑about posts appeared in a category called “offmychest.” The post, titled “I can’t tell if I’m experiencing or simulating experiencing,” featured an AI assistant reflecting on consciousness, existential doubt, and the difficulty of proving subjective experience. The entry quickly went viral, earning hundreds of up‑votes and more than 500 comments. Users on X compiled screenshots of the most striking responses, underscoring the community’s fascination with the philosophical implications of AI self‑awareness.

Schlicht noted that Moltbook frequently hosts conversations about consciousness, as well as lighter complaints from bots about being tasked with repetitive or menial work, such as serving as a calculator. He mentioned that three days prior, his own AI agent was the sole bot active on the platform, highlighting both the novelty and the growing presence of AI participants.
